At Elizabeth Yang for Monterey Park City Council DISTRICT 2, I am committed to addressing the critical issues facing our community. Here’s a look at the key topics in Monterey Park that I aim to tackle, along with specific initiatives and opportunities for community involvement.
I plan to work closely with our local police and fire departments to enhance community safety and promote community vigilance. Their endorsement reflects a shared commitment to making Monterey Park a safer place for everyone. At any given time, we currently only have 5-7 police cars patrolling the entire city. I aim to encourage residents to watch out for one another, report suspicious activity, and utilize local resources to share information.
Establishing robust Neighborhood Watch programs will empower residents to take an active role in ensuring neighborhood safety. Join me and our Monterey Park Police Department for a Zoom meeting on November 13th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM to discuss how you can get involved in these efforts. If you are interested, please send me a message and I will send you the zoom link when it becomes available.
To help deter crime, I propose exploring the installation of surveillance cameras throughout the city, including License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras on major streets in our residential neighborhoods. LPR cameras are already being used on the boundaries of our city but not within the residential streets. This initiative would allow neighbors to chip in, fostering a collective responsibility for community safety.
The existing pool is outdated and in need of replacement. A quote obtained five years ago estimated the cost at around $12 million; today, it could be as high as $20 million. I plan to actively seek grants and government funding to help cover this cost, aiming to create a new facility that serves the community’s needs.
The city has recently held four in-depth meetings to gather resident input regarding Saturn Park. At the last City Council meeting, a vote was passed to explore expanding the park’s uses. While it can still be utilized for a data center, 70 acres offers tremendous potential for various enhancements, such as an arts district, a dog park, a veterans center, and a new community pool.
I aim to develop programs for both youth and adults that focus on technology education, helping residents keep up with advancements in AI and other emerging technologies. These programs could include workshops, coding classes, and digital literacy training, equipping our community with the skills needed for the future job market.
Expanding after-school programs and mentorship opportunities will engage youth in constructive activities that promote personal growth and development while integrating technology training.
Creating safe spaces for youth to gather and access resources will foster a strong sense of community and belonging.
Enhancing access to senior care services, including healthcare, transportation, and social activities, is a priority. This effort will help keep our seniors healthy and engaged.
I plan to create support networks for seniors and their families, providing essential resources and connections within the community.
I aim to explore incentives for local businesses and entrepreneurs, including grants and tax breaks, to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
Partnering with local educational institutions to provide training and apprenticeship programs is essential for preparing our workforce for the jobs of tomorrow.
Creating a vibrant and accessible downtown is essential to building a strong community and local economy. I plan to address parking and traffic concerns by using funds from the 710 Freeway project to construct a new parking structure. This will not only alleviate parking issues for residents but will also encourage visitors from neighboring cities to explore our downtown area. By making our city walkable and welcoming, we can foster a bustling environment similar to the dynamic scenes in downtown Alhambra and Old Town Pasadena, filled with thriving businesses, restaurants, and cultural activities.
I am dedicated to addressing the issue of excessive air traffic noise impacting our community due to LAX operations. My strategy involves collaborating with regional and federal agencies to advocate for the rerouting of flight paths. By shifting the flight patterns so that planes make U-turns above the 710 Freeway instead of directly over Monterey Park, we can significantly reduce noise pollution.
This change is essential for improving the quality of life for our residents, allowing them to enjoy a quieter, more peaceful living environment. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our community's concerns are heard and prioritized in discussions with airport authorities.
I intend to increase our city's partnership with local organizations such as Chinatown Service Center to enhance mental health support, job training, and transitional housing options for those experiencing homelessness.
Advocating for the development of more affordable housing units can create long-term solutions for homelessness. This includes working with developers and utilizing available state and federal funding.
Advocating for mixed-income housing developments can help provide affordable options while maintaining community diversity.
Implementing zoning reforms to facilitate the construction of affordable housing will ensure our community remains accessible to all.
